Considering Culture Assignment Instructions
The Big 6 Research Model

Step 1 – Task Definition (What needs to be done?)
v You will:
    1. Investigate your country’s culture through the creation of powerful fat questions (refer to the first three essential questions from the student unit handout). Seek information to answer those questions.
    2. Present that information on your country’s culture to the class in the form of an oral presentation supported by a power point presentation.

You will need to collect information on 3 – 4 of the following aspects of your country:
· Geography – absolute & relative location, climate, weather, terrain, population density, population distribution, population composition
· Science, Technology & Innovation – inventions, infrastructure, degree of modernization, tools and ways of doing things to make life easier
· Beliefs, Values & Customs – religions, life cycle events or ceremonies, annual ceremonies, status - These can become guides or patterns for how to live.
· Social Organizations – family, government, community organizations, peer groups, education system
· Communication – ways of expressing ideas and emotions – language, nonverbal communication, art, mass media, communications technology
· Famous People & Places - key people or places which have had a lasting impact upon the culture

You will also research and analyze 2-3 aspects from below the water line of the “Cultural Iceberg”.

Begin analyzing the facts you have located by considering the following questions:

1. How these influences have shaped your culture?

2. What the expressions of your culture tell us about your society.

Step 2 – Information seeking Strategies (What resources can I use?)
v Who can I talk to get the information I need?
v What can I read to get the information I need?

Step 3 – Location and Access (Where can I find these resources)
v Where will I get my information?

Step 4 – Use of Information (What can I use from these resources)
v How will I select which information is relevant.
v How will I record my chosen information?
v How will I use and organize the information?

Step 5 – Synthesis (What can I do to make and finish the job?)
Explain and share with your class mates the critical connections you have made about factors that have influenced the culture of your country.
v How will I present it?
1. Oral Presentation
2. Supporting PowerPoint Presentation

REMINDER: In your presentation you must include 3 - 4 of the Components of Culture and 2 - 3 aspects from below the waterline of the Cultural Iceberg.
For every one of the selected items that you are presenting you will need to share your analysis guided by the two analysis questions from STEP 1.
This presentation is not a list of facts. This presentation is a well researched analysis of your culture.
